7th edition of (Un)heard Music Festival in Korzo The Hague

March 11 & 12, 2023

New Zealand John Psathas is composer in residence

On Saturday 11 and Sunday 12 March, Matangi will present the (Un)heard Music Festival in Korzo The Hague for the 7th time. Together with their musical friends, Matangi will perform works by the Greek-New Zealand composer John Psathas and other composers from down under during the festival. Composer in residence John Psathas (1966) is one of the most performed composers from New Zealand, but still 'unheard’ in the Netherlands.

In 2004, Psathas composed the music for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Athens. In 2014, Psathas worked on a global film music project to commemorate the First World War. The result was the film No Man's Land in which Psathas collaborated with 150 musicians and filmmakers. This film can be seen during the upcoming (Un)heard Music Festival on 11 & 12 March.

World premiere
On Saturday evening 11 March (8.30 pm) a new work by Psathas will have its world premiere during the festival. Second-Hand Time is played by pianist Dawn Hardwick. This work for piano, sounds and text is a deeply philosophical work in which the technical developments of our time are linked to the human perception of reality and communication. In a talk show on Saturday afternoon March 11 (4.30 pm) Psathas talks about the creation of this work.

Opening concert
The (Un)heard Music Festival kicks off on Saturday afternoon, March 11 (3 p.m.) with the music that inspired Matangi to invite Psathas. The Dutch Don't Dance Division has choreographed Atalanta, a composition by Psathas from 2020.

In addition to work by Psathas, Matangi also plays works by the Greek-Dutch composer Calliope Tsoupaki and the American minimalist Philip Glass during this opening concert.

Down-Under
In the Sunday morning program Down-Under (11 a.m.) Matangi presents a musical sample of Australian and New Zealand composers, including works by Alison Isadora and Kate Moore.

Varied festival
In addition to the concerts, film, talk show and the world premiere, the (Un)heard Music Festival offers a varied program including a High Tea on Saturday afternoon and an Afterparty on late Saturday evening in the Korzo Club.
