Matangi Moments: Haydn - Die sieben letzten Worte

Matangi Moments ranges from timeless classical masterpieces to surprising and genre-crossing collaborations. The most fitting work for a string quartet during the Passion period is Die sieben letzten Worte unseres Erlösers am Kreuze by Haydn. These seven sonatas for string quartet, with their narrative character, are truly impressive. The slow tempos of the dramatic opening, all seven movements, and the length of the piece bring you into an almost trance-like state—an hour of adagios filled with so many different atmospheres and emotions, only to be suddenly interrupted by the bombastic and shocking earthquake (Il Terremoto) at the end.
It is a true test of concentration for the four musicians, who must bring to life a rollercoaster of intense emotions such as despair, pain, forgiveness, hope, resignation, and death. Of all the existing versions of this piece, the string quartet form has become the most well-known and popular. Possibly because the intimacy of this form aligns best with the idea of four people united in prayer.
YOUNG TALENT
Matangi places great importance on talent development. That’s why we are proud of our annual collaboration with the Prinses Christina Concours. Each year, we present the Matangi Prize to an exceptional musical talent—an honor that, in this edition of Matangi Moments, is awarded to mezzo-soprano Aaike Nortier.
Together with Aaike, we will perform the breathtaking Il Tramonto by Respighi, a captivating musical piece full of emotion and depth, where death is portrayed as a form of redemption—a profound theme that also resonates in Die sieben letzten Worte.
