In Transit

Matangi is celebrating its 25th anniversary with the jubilee program 'In Transit'. The quartet will honor its classical roots while contributing to the (Dutch) string quartet canon with a new composition by Robin de Raaff. 'In Transit' signifies 'on the way' or 'in transit.' For Matangi, this 25th anniversary is not an endpoint but a moment to look toward the future.

The 'In Transit' program encompasses string quartet repertoire spanning four centuries: Haydn's string quartet op. 20/5 from the 18th century, Ludwig van Beethoven's string quartet op. 135 from the 19th century, Dmitri Shostakovich's 7th string quartet from the 20th century, and a new work by Dutch composer Robin de Raaff from the 21st century.

With 'In Transit', Matangi takes the audience on a journey with a constantly shifting musical perspective. While Haydn remains rooted in classical tradition and Beethoven steps into romanticism, Shostakovich finds himself in the midst of the 20th century. Robin de Raaff's new piece will not only represent a 21st-century work but will also articulate a vision for the future of classical string quartet music. This is precisely what Matangi aims to achieve with 'In Transit': celebrating 25 years of string quartet playing, placed within both historical and future perspectives.
